Molluscum contagiosum is a very common viral infection of the skin caused by a DNA poxvirus and affects both children and adults.

Molluscum contagiosum is common in two age groups. The first is in childhood, when spread occurs from direct skin contact. , the commonest way for adults to get it is from children who bring it home from school. In adults, it may occur at times as a sexually transmitted disease.
